Windows and Their Many Styles
Windows make up a large part of your home’s personality and functionality. They are the key to natural light and fresh air, and also enhance curb appeal. If you notice that your windows are drafty, difficult to open, or have rotted frames, it may be time for an upgrade. Replacing your windows can increase your home’s value and security while also lowering energy costs. The first step in the replacement window process is choosing which window style is suitable for your home. As your research, you’ll probably find that not all windows in your home are exactly the same. So, you may find that you need a few different styles. This is also your chance to change some windows to be more functional or of a different design altogether. Whatever the case may be, you’ll need to know your window styles before you start replacing.
Determine Your Replacement Window Style
To make your hunt for the right replacement window easier, we included various window styles.
Casement Windows– are hung from the side and usually have a crank to open like a door.
These windows usually compliment the design of modern home and give traditional homes and updated look. They are often located over the kitchen sink for easy opening and cleaning.
Awning Windows – are hinged at the top and open outward from the left or right and the bottom.
These can be installed below, above, or alongside a stationary operating window. They allow for ventilation even during light rain. Awning windows are most commonly used with other window styles, and can also be placed higher on walls for privacy.
Sash Windows– are made with one or more movable glass panels.
These windows slide vertically along a track to open and close. These can add a timeless touch to your home.
Horizontal Sliders– have the sashes side by side and one side slides open over the other.
Probably one of the most common window styles, they don’t occupy any exterior or interior space. These are popular in areas where a swinging sash or crank-style window isn’t desired.
Single Hung Windows– the top sash doesn’t move, and the bottom moves up to open.
These windows are perfect for openings where width is greater than height. They are mostly use as the standard window option when constructing a new home or office space. Although widely cheaper, these have cleaning and ventilation limitations that you should take into consideration. Some of these limitations involves higher moisture levels and little humidity relief because only the lower sash opens.
Double Hung Windows– both the top and bottom open up and down.
These are the most common and popular among homes. Both sashes easily open fully and tilt inward to make for easy use. These windows are best for opening where the height is greater than the width, like walls by walkways or patios.
Picture Windows– large, fixed windows that do not open.
These windows are stationary and let in the maximum amount of light and outdoor views. They usually are equipped with a single pane of glass and improve your home’s energy efficiency.
Radius Windows– an arch or half circle window above another rectangular window.
These windows can be operable to let in some light and air. It’s common to enhance the design of radius windows by adding grids for aesthetics.
Bay or Bow Windows – overhang out from the exterior of the siding of the house
These are a combination of windows, most commonly stationary window in the middle with either casement or double-hung windows. They allow you to have more of a view, even with limited wall space.
