Rockwood

Custom shutters, blinds and shades, measured and fitted by Rockwood's own people. We make the introduction and they take it from there, so you are dealing directly with the company that builds them.

Three things decide how a shutter looks

Your Design Consultant will walk you through all of it with the samples in front of you. It still helps to know the words before somebody uses them.

Louver size

Louvers are the boards that tilt. Rockwood builds them at 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 inches, and now 5.5 inches on the hardwood line. Narrow louvers give you more of them across the panel and read traditional. Wide ones look contemporary, and when they are tilted up there is more open glass to see through, which matters on a window you actually look out of.

Classic tilt or ClearLine

Classic tilt runs a rod down the front of the panel, the way shutters have always looked. ClearLine hides the mechanism inside the stile so nothing crosses the view. They work identically. This one is purely about the look you want.

Divider rail

A divider rail splits the panel so the top and bottom tilt independently. Close the bottom half against the street and leave the top open for daylight. On a tall window it usually earns its place.

What Rockwood makes

Four interior shutter lines, a full range of blinds and shades, custom work for the openings that defeat a stock product, and exterior shutters. Everything is built to the opening it goes in.

Which shutter material suits the room
  • Steam and splashes. Poly is solid-core PVC and does not mind a shower room or a window over the sink.
  • Sidelights, cafe shutters, anything sitting above existing trim. LiteLine has the slimmest profiles of the four.
  • A painted finish on a wide opening. Premiere Ultra puts poly louvers on wood rails and stiles, so it holds its shape at width.
  • A stain, or a shape nothing else will cover. Premiere Hardwood takes stains and has virtually no limit on size or shape.

Who stands behind what

Rockwood measures, builds and installs these, so the workmanship and the warranty are theirs. Our own one-year guarantee covers the windows and doors we fit. It does not extend to window coverings, so anything to do with the shutters goes back to Rockwood.

Rockwood warrants shutters against defects in materials and workmanship for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, with five years on the color-fastness of the paints and stains. Blinds and shades run on a separate schedule: limited lifetime across most of the range, five years on motorized parts, fabric-covered valances and the value lines. Their full terms are on rockwoodshutters.com.

Questions we get asked

The ones that come up at the kitchen table, mostly about who is responsible for what.

Who actually does the work?

Rockwood. Their Design Consultant comes to your house with the samples, their team measures, and their own technicians install. We make the introduction and then stay out of the way. If something needs putting right afterwards, Rockwood is who you call.

Do I have to be buying windows from you?

No. Most people who ask about this are already having windows or doors done, and it is a natural moment to think about it, because a bare new window is when you notice. You are welcome to use it either way.

What is the difference between blinds and shades?

Rockwood's own definition is the clearest one going: blinds use slats that tilt open and closed, and shades are fabric or woven and raise and lower. Shutters are a third thing. Those are the louvered panels hinged on a frame, and they stay with the house when you sell it.

Can I get shutters on a slider or a French door?

Yes. There is a bifold and a bypass arrangement for sliding doors, and a French door version with a cutout sized around your handle so the door still works normally. Valance toppers finish the head of a slider where the track would otherwise show.

What about an arched or an odd-shaped window?

That is where custom shutters earn their money. Rockwood builds five arch designs, and on most of them the louvers inside the arch actually move, which is the part people assume is fixed. Because every panel is made to its own opening, angles, circles and rakes are all on the table.

Does Rockwood do exterior shutters?

Yes, in two collections. Savannah is the plainer one, with flat, shiplap and board and batten styles, and Charleston adds raised panels, faux louvers and reeded or fluted faces. They are decorative and not storm rated. Rockwood does not install them in every area, so ask your Design Consultant whether they can fit them at your address.

We have grandchildren in the house. Is there a cordless option?

Yes, and across much of the range it is how they come. Rockwood states that their cordless products are ANSI/WCMA compliant. Shutters have no cords at all, so a nursery or a playroom is straightforward.

Where are they made?

The shutters are built at Rockwood's own plant in Houston, Texas. Their blinds and shades come from a network of supply partners instead, so “made in Houston” covers the shutters and not the whole range.

Who warranties them, you or Rockwood?

Rockwood. They fit them, so the warranty is theirs. Shutters are covered against defects for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, with five years on the color-fastness of paints and stains. Blinds and shades sit on a separate schedule. Our own one-year workmanship guarantee covers the windows and doors we install.
