Out here the patio is another room for eight months of the year. What you put between the two decides whether it feels that way.
They look similar in a brochure and behave completely differently in a house. The honest differences are below, including what each one costs you in space or budget.

The big opening
Panels glide sideways and stack behind one another, or disappear entirely into a pocket built inside the wall. Openings past twenty feet are routine. When it is closed you still have a clean run of glass rather than a row of hinges.

The widest clear span
Panels hinge together and concertina back against the wall, clearing close to the whole opening. Nothing else gives you as much unobstructed space, and there is a moment when it folds away that people genuinely enjoy.

Most homes, most budgets
The everyday choice, and for a straight like-for-like replacement usually the sensible one. A modern narrow-frame slider carries far more glass than the aluminium unit it replaces, in the same opening, often in a single day.
We are not tied to one manufacturer, which means the honest answer to “which is best” is “best for what”. Roughly how it breaks down:
The volume choice and what most valley homes get. Vinyl that survives the heat, plus the VX350 and AX moving glass wall systems when the opening gets big. We are a Milgard Platinum Dealer, their highest level.
Milgard →Where the specification steps up. Slim thermally broken aluminium for people who want the minimal-frame look and more glass than vinyl can carry at that span.
ES Windows →Wood and clad bi-fold and multi-slide, built to order. The choice when the house calls for a timber interior rather than metal or vinyl.
AG Millworks →European aluminium with the thinnest stiles we fit. The 120 and 165 sliding systems where the meeting stile has to all but disappear.
Luminara →Most of what goes wrong with these doors here comes down to three things, and none of them are in the brochure.
People blame a heavy door for getting stiff. It is almost always the track. Blown sand works into the rollers and grinds them flat, which is why roller quality and a track you can actually clean matter more here than anywhere else in California.
Aluminium conducts. Without a thermal break the frame becomes a radiator and you can feel it from the sofa. Thermally broken aluminium or vinyl is not an upgrade in this climate, it is the baseline.
Title 24 does not care how much you want a glass wall. Getting a large opening through compliance takes performance modelling on the whole envelope, which is a step most quotes leave until it is a problem.
You do not have to book anything to keep looking into this.
