Federal Tax Credit Update

The Federal Tax Credit for Windows and Doors Has Ended

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit ended on December 31, 2025. Windows, skylights and exterior doors installed in 2026 or later do not qualify.

If your windows or doors were installed on or before December 31, 2025, you may still be able to claim the credit for that tax year. Please ask your tax preparer.

WHY IT WORKS

What Makes a Window Efficient?

  • Low-E Glass: Special coatings reflect infrared light, keeping heat inside in winter and outside in summer.
  • Gas Fills: Spaces between panes are filled with Argon or Krypton gas, which insulates better than regular air.
  • Warm Edge Spacers: Non-metallic spacers keep glass panes the correct distance apart and reduce heat transfer at the edge.

What Makes a Door Efficient?

  • Improved Core Materials: Fiberglass, wood cladding, and steel with polyurethane foam cores are among the most energy-efficient materials available.
  • Magnetic Weatherstripping: New frames may include magnetic strips to create a tighter seal against air leakage.
  • Multiple Glass Panes: Double or triple-paned insulating glass is used to reduce heat flow.

What About Skylights?

  • Traditional Skylights: Use the same technologies as windows (Low-E glass, gas fills) to manage direct sun and temperature differentials.
  • Tubular Daylighting (TDD): Devices that gather sunlight at the roof and transmit it down to a diffusing lens in interior rooms.
  • Increased Daylight: TDDs illuminate closets, hallways, or bathrooms that wouldn't otherwise have access to sunlight.
