You’ve been waiting for this day. So you’ve spent weeks looking at options and making decisions, and you finally ordered beautiful replacement windows for your home. You can’t wait for your new windows to make a dramatic difference in the beauty and functionality of your home.
Most people will only have new windows installed once or twice in their lifetime. Since every project is different, it might be difficult to know what to expect. However, there are several things you can do to prepare and help ensure your window replacement goes smoothly.
Prepare Your Home
You can do your part to help the window installation crew work as efficiently as possible by prepping your home before they arrive.
- Put away small items of value and clear the work area of anything fragile or delicate, paying close attention to window sills
- Strip windows by removing window blinds, shades, and treatments
- Clear a path by removing furniture, area rugs, and plants around the windows
- Move large items four to six feet away from windows. If you cannot move the more significant pieces of furniture, cover them with blankets or sheets to protect them from dust and debris.
- Deactivate any alarm systems on your current windows. You will want to notify your alarm company before installation day. You might want them to return to your home after the installation to reconnect their alarm sensors on your new windows.
- Make sure there is room on the outside of your home for scaffolding or ladders
- Trim bushes, trees, and shrubs to allow at least two feet for installers to work comfortably
- Designate access to your home and set up a workspace for the crew to set up equipment and tools. You will want to ensure this space has convenient access to electrical outlets.
- For the safety of both the crew and your loved ones, it is critically important to keep children and pets away from work areas. Arrange for pets and children to be cared for in a separate location during your replacement window installation.
Day of Installation – What To Expect
Since you’ve prepared your home, the window replacement crew can get started right away.
- While the crew sets up equipment, meet with the team leader to walk through the house and go over each window. This time provides you with a chance to ask questions or catch any errors that could have been made in the ordering process.
- Before the crew gets started, confirm that drop cloths or other protective materials are placed on the floor in areas you would like protected from dirt and debris
- If your project requires a multi-person crew, one set of installers will typically bring in the new windows while the other set of installers will remove the existing windows
- New windows are set in place and leveled. The technician will then seal, caulk and insulate the exterior and interior to ensure a proper seal.
- As a general rule, the crew will remove only one or two windows at a time, and then those windows are immediately replaced. This ensures that your home is not exposed to the elements, especially if the project lasts more than one day.
- Depending on the size of your project and crew, you can expect 12 to 15 windows to be removed and replaced at the end of one day.
- The installation crew should never leave tools in your home, and they should make sure rooms are broom-clean and old windows outside are removed (unless you are keeping them).
Final Inspection
Your brand new windows are installed, but before you can enjoy those pristine new views, it is customary to have a final walk-through with the team leader.
- During the final walk-through, the team leader will do a final inspection with you to make sure everything is in perfect order
- They will also orient you with how your new windows function, how to clean them, and answer any questions you may have
- Labels are often left on the windows since they contain warranty information. If the crew does remove the labels for you, be sure to ask them to leave them with you.
- Before the crew leaves, the technicians should clean their workspace, leaving no trace of their activity.
