At this time of year when the weather is near perfect, many people open their windows to let in the fresh air. However, open windows can be very dangerous for small children. The first week of April is recognized as National Window Safety Week and at California Window and Door we are proud to help heighten the awareness of how to reduce the risk of accidental falls. Whether you have older windows or brand new windows, the Window Safety Task Force offers these tips to help keep children safe:
- Avoid the placement of furniture near windows to prevent children from climbing
- Do not rely on insect screens to prevent a window fall
- Keep children’s play away from open windows and doors
- Install building code-compliant devices designed to limit how far a window will open or window guards with release mechanisms to help prevent a fall
- Teach your child how to safely use a window to escape during an emergency
Certainly if you have a two story house, or are on the upper floor of an apartment or condo, these window safety tips are extremely important. Many homes in the desert are single story, but keep in mind that small children can still be hurt from a fall or climbing through a window or screen and may visit a home with higher story windows. Although this week is designated as Window Safety Week, window safety should be an ongoing discussion with children throughout the year and as they grow older.
